I spent 14 months building a side biz before I showed anyone, and that was the mistake that cost me $3k
When I started my freelance design thing in 2023 I kept it hidden from my coworkers for 14 months because I was scared of getting caught. I spent around $3,000 on courses, a logo, a website, and software before I ever asked one real person to pay me for anything. The worst part was that my first three actual paying clients came from two people I already knew, not from any of the stuff I bought. I learned more in one week of talking to strangers at a coffee shop in Denver than I did in six months of watching tutorials alone in my apartment. If you are building something on the side, just tell people way earlier than feels comfortable. Has anyone else here sunk money into prep work that did nothing for you once real customers showed up?
