Tried to save $50 fixing a leaky pipe and flooded my bathroom in 15 minutes flat

Ngl, I thought watching a YouTube tutorial was enough to replace a P-trap under my sink, but I cross-threaded the new one and water sprayed everywhere until I turned the main valve off at 11pm soaking wet.

...and that's exactly why I tell people to always have a bucket and some towels ready before they even touch a pipe. But here's what I'm wondering: did you actually test for leaks before you put everything back under the sink and turned the water on full blast? Because a lot of folks make the mistake of just cranking it open and hoping for the best. I've learned that you need to turn the water on slow at first, check every joint with a dry paper towel, and then tighten things up more if you see even a tiny drop. That little bit of patience could have saved you from having to mop up the whole floor at 11pm.

Right? Just skip the patience part and go straight to water works. Who needs a good night's sleep when you can have a indoor swimming pool at midnight. That dry paper towel trick is gold though, learned it the hard way myself after I had to replace a warped cabinet bottom. Ever had a leak so bad you found water in the room next door?
