Serious question, my old boss told me to quit chasing every late invoice and it saved my side gig
About 8 months ago I was doing bookkeeping on the side for 3 small shops here in Boise and I was spending maybe 6 hours a week just emailing people about $80 and $120 invoices that were past due. My old boss Carla pulled me aside and told me to stop. She said pick the clients who pay over $500 late and let the small stuff go, because the chasing costs more than the money. I thought she was nuts, that felt like giving up money. So I tried it for 2 months and tracked everything in a spreadsheet. Turns out I recovered about $1,900 from the big accounts and my stress went way down, but I also ate roughly $340 in invoices I just let slide. The weird part is I could not tell if I quit on those small clients or if I was just being smart. Kind of feels like the same thing sometimes. Has anyone else drawn a line like that, or did I just give up on money I was owed?
