My ceiling fan dropped 2 inches during a 1AM thunderstorm, now the drywall above it is cracked

I was laying in bed when the whole unit lurched down and started wobbling like crazy, so I shut it off, pulled the chain, and propped a broom handle under it until morning, but has anyone else had a landlord try to blame them for pre-existing ceiling damage?
