Vent: customer's DIY fix made our 3 hour job into a full tear down

Got a call in Columbus last Tuesday for a fridge that wasn't cooling. They'd 'fixed' it by jamming a screwdriver into the thermostat housing, which shorted the whole control board and killed the compressor relay. Did I get lucky with just a board swap or is there a smarter way to talk people out of touching things?
