Hot take: topping trees is not always the devil
Every arborist I know says topping is a sin, but a state forester told me last month that 3 of 5 of his worst hazard trees were topped decades ago and the cuts callused over fine, no rot. I still won't top a healthy oak, but the blanket rule bugs me. Anyone got real rot data on this or are we all just repeating the same line?

Guess we should all just start hacking the tops off and see what happens in 40 years. The arborist code is mostly just guys yelling "wrong!" at each other with zero follow up, so honestly who knows.
