That $400 ground penetrating radar rental was a total bust

I paid $400 to rent a ground penetrating radar unit for a weekend to scan my property before putting in a fence. I was looking for old buried foundations or trash pits from the 1800s, figured it would be a cool way to do amateur archaeology in my own yard. The thing was a nightmare to calibrate, took me 6 hours just to get a clean reading on the test plot. Then when I finally walked the actual area, all I got was a blurry mess of lines I could not interpret at all. Turns out the wet clay soil here in Ohio just eats the signal. I would have been better off spending that money on a good shovel and a metal detector. Has anyone else wasted cash on high tech gear that the ground conditions made useless?
