Got cornered in a parking lot by a guy with a $40 tripod who called my mount 'baby stuff'
I was packing up my gear after a pretty good night of shooting Jupiter and three of its moons from a gravel lot outside Flagstaff when this guy pulls in and starts setting up next to me. Mind you it's 1am and I'm tired, but he sees my setup and goes 'that mount is baby stuff' like it's the most normal thing to say to a stranger. He's got a DSLR on a cheap tripod and he's bragging about his Milford, Ohio astronomy club meetings, which honestly would've been fine if he hadn't spent the next 20 minutes explaining autoguiding to me while I'm literally already tracking. I finally asked him to see his shots from the club and he scrolls past maybe 15 frames of blurry star trails before landing on one decent Moon pic. The whole thing bugged me for a week, and here's why: everybody in this hobby acts like gear is the scoreboard, and it makes new people quit before they ever get a clean shot of Saturn's rings. His best picture was taken with a rig worth less than my finder scope, so maybe the mount really doesn't matter as much as we pretend. Has anyone else had a run-in with a field expert who talks big and shoots blurry?
