A ranger's advice about water crossings saved my trip in Glacier
Back in June a Glacier NP ranger told me to cross early morning when the creeks are lowest, not at noon like I planned. I thought he was being overly cautious, but the difference at McDonald Creek was huge, the water was maybe 2 feet lower and way more manageable. Anyone else take ranger suggestions over your own instincts and come out ahead?
Watched my buddy ignore the same kind of advice on a trip to the Winds last summer. The ranger told him to cross the river by 8am because a storm was coming in that afternoon, but he slept in and hit the water around 1pm. What was a calm knee deep creek in the morning had turned into a chest deep mess of mud and fast water. He got swept about 30 feet downstream and lost his trekking poles plus a $200 camera. We spent two hours waiting for him to warm up because he was shaking so bad. Now he's the first one up every morning on trips and he always checks with the rangers before we head out.
