I called ultralight packs a scam for 10 years, then my knee gave out on the AT in Virginia
Carried a 45 pound load for most of my 20s because I figured heavy gear just works and light gear is for people with money to burn. Last June my right knee finally quit on me around mile 700 near Waynesboro, and I could barely walk the last 3 miles to the road. A guy at the hostel let me try his 22 pound setup for a 6 mile section the next morning, and I honestly could not believe my legs. I went home, weighed every single thing in my pack, and got rid of 18 pounds of stuff I had been hauling around for no reason. The old mindset was wrong, but I still think some of those $400 packs are overpriced. What is the one piece of gear you held onto way too long before finally swapping it out?
