PSA: My 5-day solo trip on the Superior Hiking Trail taught me that 'just push through' is bad advice
Everyone on this forum loves to say you should push through pain and bad weather to hit your miles. I did that last June on a 5-day stretch from Gooseberry Falls to Beaver Bay in Minnesota, and it ended with me sitting in a ditch for 3 hours waiting for a ride. Day 2 was supposed to be 14 miles, but a storm rolled in around mile 8 and I kept going because I didn't want to 'waste' the day. My knee started aching, I slipped on a wet root near Split Rock, and by the time I set up camp I could barely bend my leg. The next morning I stupidly tried to keep my schedule and made it 2 miles before I had to stop. A day hiker gave me some ibuprofen and said something that stuck: 'The trail will still be here next year.' I called for a shuttle from the ranger station and lost $85 on a ride I didn't plan for. Now I build in a zero day every 3 days no matter what, and my trips are way more fun. Has anyone else had a route fall apart because they refused to slow down?
