The 3am detour near Glacier that nearly ended my trip

I rerouted around a washed-out bridge on the Highline Trail last August and ended up on a goat path that took 6 extra hours, so now I'm wondering if anyone else trusts their GPS detours or just turns back when the trail gets sketchy?

GPS detours near Glacier are basically gambling with your life, I swear. I read a story last year about a guy who followed a "shortcut" on a forest service road and ended up needing a helicopter rescue because his rental car bottomed out on a boulder field. That said, I've also had GPS save my butt on the Going-to-the-Sun Road when the main route was closed for hours due to an avalanche. The trick is checking if the detour is on a numbered road versus something that looks like a squiggle on the map. If it's not a real road, I turn back, no matter how much time it costs. 6 extra hours sucks, but it beats spending the night out there with no gear.
