Turns out my ultralight gear dropout was the dumbest move I ever made on the trail
Two summers ago I swapped my whole setup for a 3 pound base weight and felt like a genius until a cold rain hit me on the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks. I spent 4 hours shivering under a tarp because my quilt and thin pad couldn't cut it, and a guy with a 12 pound pack walked by totally fine. Did I miss something about comfort mattering more than the number on the scale, or are we all just lying to ourselves?
That NPT stretch past Piseco gets brutal when the rain rolls in sideways. A 3 pound base weight only works if you're moving fast and sleeping in shelters or you're out west where it's dry. In the Adirondacks you need a real pad with an R value around 4 or 5 and a quilt rated 10 degrees colder than you plan for, because damp air sucks the heat right out of you. The guy with the 12 pound pack wasn't tougher than you, he just packed for the trail he was actually on instead of the one in his head.
