Wasted $80 on a solar water heater the chickens never used

Bought one of those fancy solar heated waterers last January after reading reviews, figured it would pay for itself. Set it up in the coop run, checked the temp, worked fine. My 6 hens would not touch it, they kept pecking at the frozen solid regular dish next to it. After a week of them ignoring the warm water I gave up and returned it to Tractor Supply, only got half back. Anyone else have birds that refuse new gear no matter how practical it is?

Did they at least drink from the melted puddle under it? Mine sure did.
