Why does nobody tell you the hinge screws are the problem until the cabinet is on the wall
I hung the upper cabinets in my kitchen on a Saturday in March and stood back feeling pretty good about it, then by Monday two of the doors were sagging so bad they hit each other in the middle. I pulled one down and found the screws had stripped out of the particle board, because I had used the 1 inch ones that came in the box instead of going into the studs behind the drywall. I was so mad at myself, standing there on a step stool at 9pm with a flashlight in my teeth, that I almost just patched it with wood filler and called it done. Instead I backed out every screw, drilled fresh holes two inches over, and ran 2 1/2 inch cabinet screws right into the framing. Took me three extra hours and one stripped driver bit, but those doors have not moved a bit since. The old cabinets I took out had been up for 40 years and now I get why the guy who built them used so many screws. So what am I missing on the lower cabinets, do you brace them to the floor or just shim and screw to the wall?
