The houseplant that kept dying turned out to be my roommate's secret air freshener habit

I thought I was cursed with brown thumbs until I found a pile of 14 half-burned vanilla candles hidden under the sink, and the plant only revived after I tossed them. Is it neglect or sabotage when someone's trying to mask their weed smell with something that also kills your basil? Anyone else had a roommate whose fix was worse than the problem?
