A broker buddy asked why I still keep 6 months in a savings account at 0.4 percent, and his math finally got me
My friend Dave works at a brokerage here in Columbus and we were grabbing lunch three weeks ago when I mentioned I had about $14,000 sitting in a plain savings account at my bank earning basically nothing. He didn't pitch me anything, he just asked what that money was for, and when I said "just in case" he pointed out that "just in case" has two very different buckets: money I might need tomorrow versus money I won't touch for a year. The next week I moved $9,000 into a money market fund through his firm, kept the rest in the bank for actual emergencies, and the split feels way less dumb than the all or nothing approach I had been clinging to. Curious if other people here keep everything in one place for peace of mind, or do you split the emergency fund between a bank and a broker like this?
