TIL my broker's settlement account isn't the same as my bank savings account
I got hit with an overdraft fee last month because I assumed money in my broker's settlement account would clear instantly to my checking account. I was sitting in a Starbucks in Denver trying to pay my rent online, and the transfer just sat there pending for three days. My landlord called me on the fourth day saying the check bounced, and I had to pay a $45 late fee on top of everything. My bank charged me $35 for the NSF, and my broker couldn't do anything because the settlement hadn't posted yet. Now I keep a separate $500 buffer in my actual bank account just to cover this gap. Has anyone else gotten burned by the lag between brokerage cash and bank cash?

Yeah this exact thing got me a few years ago. Brokers don't tell you that cash from a trade settlement or transfer can take 2-3 business days to actually hit your bank. I started keeping a bare minimum $300 in my checking account at all times to cover float. Also check if your broker offers a debit card that pulls directly from the settlement fund. That saved me a couple times when I needed cash fast. Another thing is setting up a separate high yield savings account with no transfer delays hooked to your checking. A $500 buffer like you're doing is smart but some people need more if they pay rent with it. Just treat settlement cash like it's on a delay and you'll avoid the fees.

yo @emmag40 actually settlement times are T+1 now for most stocks, stocks settled same day as of last year. So your info might be a bit outdated but the buffer idea still holds up.
