Caught myself judging a banned book I never actually read
Last year at a library sale in Akron, I grabbed a copy of a challenged YA novel because the cover looked edgy, and I made a joke to my friend about how it was probably trash for troubled kids. Then I actually read it on my night break during a slow shift, and realized I had been repeating the same lazy talking points as the parents who wanted it pulled. The main character's situation was messy and real, and it made me uncomfortable in a way that had nothing to do with bad writing or shock value. It hit me that I was doing the exact thing I criticize: forming an opinion based on a summary and a rumor instead of the text itself. Has anyone else caught themselves buying into the hype against a book, only to flip after reading it? What changed your mind?
