Paid $40 for a rare edition at a flea market in Tulsa, turned out to be a print-on-demand fake

I was so sure I'd scored a bargain on a challenged title I'd been hunting for, but the binding felt off and the pages had that fresh printer smell. Anyone else get burned by counterfeit books at these stalls, or is there a way to spot them before you hand over cash?
