Rant: My kid's school pulled The Giver, so I read it out loud at dinner for 3 weeks
My 11 year old asked why anyone would ban a book about a boy who gets memories and feelings, and I couldn't answer him, so we just read a chapter a night and talked about it instead, and by the end he was arguing with me about whether Jonas made the right call, so has anyone else tried just reading the banned book with their kid instead of fighting the school board about it?
My sister did the exact same thing and then got ALL proud of herself like she'd solved world peace, meanwhile her kid was the one who actually read the book and did the thinking. Dinner table book club is genuinely such a better move than yelling at a school board meeting, because the kid gets to form his own view instead of just being told what to believe. Three weeks of chapters sounds like a lot but honestly that's how long it takes for a story to actually sink in and start arguments. The Giver is a weird one to ban too, it's basically a book about why banning stuff is bad, which I guess is exactly why it scares them.
