Rinsed a head with cold water after bleach, client almost walked out

Did a bleach and tone on a regular last Tuesday, and I tried rinsing with cold water to save time on the toner set. Their scalp went bright red and they said it felt like a bee sting, so I had to hit it with aloe gel and reschedule the whole color. Has anyone else had a bad reaction with cold rinses after lightener, or was it just my luck with that specific developer?
