Dropped $130 on a spoke tension meter and still missed the obvious broken nipple

I used the Park Tool TM-1 for 3 hours on a wheel from a 2018 Trek that kept wobbling, only to find the real issue was a hairline crack in the rim that a $9 tension gauge showed way faster, so are precision tools worth it when basic inspection catches the problem first?
