Snapped a chain tool spindle on a routine job Tuesday

I was swapping a cassette on a Trek FX that came in for a tune, nothing crazy, and my old Park CT-3 finally gave up. The spindle twisted right off halfway through the second cog, just sheared like it was butter. Had to tell the guy his bike would be another day while I ran to the shop down the street for a replacement tool. That little part cost me $45 and I ate the labor because I couldn't finish. Now I'm wondering if I should've upgraded to the shop-grade version years ago instead of nursing this one along. Anyone else had a favorite tool fail at the worst possible moment, or am I the only one who pushes cheap stuff past its limit? There's something about a broken tool that makes you rethink your whole box, right?
