Spent 3 hours chasing a ghost shift that was just a worn hanger
I was doing a full tune on a customer's bike in Columbus last Tuesday. The rear derailleur kept skipping under load no matter how much I adjusted the barrel adjuster. I checked the chain, cassette, cable tension, even swapped the derailleur itself before I thought to look at the hanger. Turns out it was bent maybe 2 degrees from a drop the owner forgot about. That one misalignment ate up my whole afternoon and made me feel like an idiot. Anyone else have a repair where the obvious answer was the last thing you checked?
Dude, 3 hours on a hanger? That's not the hanger's fault, that's on you for not checking the frame first. A bent hanger is literally the number one cause of ghost shifting and any decent shop checks alignment before touching the barrel adjuster. You swapped a whole derailleur before looking at a piece of metal you can eyeball in 10 seconds with the right tool. The obvious answer was only last because you skipped the basic steps, not because it was hiding from you.
