Truing a wheel with zip ties instead of a dial gauge, am I insane?

So my budget dial indicator died last month and I needed to true a bent rear wheel for a customer in Portland, so I rigged up two zip ties as a poor man's pointer and honestly the results were spot on. Is that a legit trick or did I just get lucky, and would you trust that vs spending $60 on a proper Park Tool gauge?
