A 70 year old smith in Abilene said quench my 1084 in warm canola, not cold, and I owe him a beer
Spent two months fighting cracks on every blade until I finally tried his way last Saturday and got 6 clean quenches in a row out of the same tank. He just laughed and said cold oil shocks the steel too fast for a simple carbon mix like mine. Any of you run warm oil on 1084, and what temp are you actually shooting for?
