Forge weld or no forge weld on a wrought iron gate restoration? I think the old guys who say "never weld, always rivet" are wrong

I'm restoring a 1890s gate from a house in Charleston and the owner wants it done in 3 weeks, so I'm leaning toward forge welding the breaks instead of the traditional riveted collars. Am I cutting a corner or are the rivet purists just stuck in their ways?
