Old timer told me to quench my hammer in water every 5 heats

I thought he was messing with me but tried it anyway last month. Keeps the face from getting too soft and mushrooming out, now I do it without even thinking. Anybody else do this or is it just an old wives tale?

Funny how the old timers always have a trick that sounds like nonsense until you try it and realize they knew what they were talking about. Reminds me of how my mom told me to put a wooden spoon across a boiling pot to stop it from overflowing - one of those things that just works for no obvious reason.

Totally agree @patricia_hayes, those old school tips always end up being the real deal. The wooden spoon thing works because it actually breaks the surface tension of the bubbles, so they can't keep building up. It's wild how something so simple is just sitting there in our kitchens waiting to be used. Kinda makes you wonder what other basic tricks we're missing out on.
