Spent $180 on a post vise at a flea market in Tulsa, then had to choose between fixing it or flipping it
Found this old post vise at a flea market in Tulsa for $180 and the guy swore it just needed a little love. Got it home and the screw was chewed up bad, like somebody ran it dry for years, and the jaws were jacked up too. So I'm standing in my shop staring at it and I had two choices: drop another $120 on a new screw and pins plus a weekend of work, or clean it up and flip it to some guy on marketplace for a quick $350. I went with fixing it because honestly I wanted a vise that could take a beating on the anvil stand, and new ones are junk anyway. Took me two Saturdays, a lot of filing, and one busted knuckle, but that thing bites down smooth now and holds hot steel like nothing. My buddy laughed and said I could've just bought a new one for $400, but I told him the old iron hits different and he shut up when he tried it. Only thing is now every rusty tool at every flea market looks like a project to me, which is a problem. Do you guys fix up old vises or just pass on the rough ones and wait for a good one?
