The forge at the state fair in Kalispell looked wrong to me and nobody else cared
Stopped by the fairgrounds in Kalispell last weekend and there was a demo forge set up with a guy doing horseshoe nails for the crowd. He had his anvil bolted to a bare pine stump about knee high, and he was tapping the steel at a dull red heat the whole time. Half the folks around me were oohing, but I watched him hit cold steel three passes in a row and nobody said a word. Most demos I see now skip the heat range talk because it bores a crowd, and that is exactly the part new smiths need to hear. So what do you all tell people at demos, keep it flashy or actually show the color chart?
