I finally get why the old guys love their worn out copies of Cosmic Encounter
Stopped by a game cafe in Portland last month and watched a group play a 1980s copy with cards so faded you could barely read them. The owner said it was his personal set, and he refused to trade it for a new edition. Watching them argue over the same broken negotiation rules with zero printed clarifications actually made the game better. It was chaos, but everyone was laughing harder than any of the polished games at the next table. Anyone else ever play a beat up older version that somehow hits different than the shiny reprint?

Wow, really? Like, it's a board game, not a sacred relic! I get that nostalgia makes things feel special, but those faded cards are just worn out, not magical. The arguing probably happened because nobody could read the rules, not because the game itself was better. I've played old editions of stuff and half the time it's just frustrating guessing what the text originally said. A polished reprint with clear wording sounds like an upgrade to me, not a downgrade. But hey, if everyone had fun, that's what counts, I guess. Just don't expect me to trade in my clean copy for your dusty one.
