Been welding boiler tubes wrong for 4 years, a 60 year old fitter finally called me out on it
He watched me lay one bead and said 'son, your puddle's chasing your heat instead of the other way around' and when I fixed it my root pass stopped looking like chewed gum, has anyone else had a simple tip from an old timer completely change their weld quality overnight?

Not sure it's that serious honestly. Yeah, you gotta have good heat control but most of the time it's just practice and muscle memory. That older fella probably just wanted to feel important pointing out your puddle. You might've been fine all along and just needed a few more inches of weld to clean it up yourself. I've seen guys chase their heat for years and still pass X-ray, so I wouldn't overthink one comment from one old timer.

How long did it take you to unlearn the bad habit? Once you knew what to look for was it just a quick fix or did it take a few days to really sink in?
