Watched a 30 year old mud drum go from crusty to clean in 2 days at the Pineville shop
We pulled the mud drum on Unit 3 last Tuesday and it had scale built up so thick you could chip it off in slabs. Old Ray bet me 20 bucks I couldn't get it down to bare metal by Friday, so I spent two full shifts with a needle gun and a wire wheel. By Thursday night the inside looked like a mirror and Ray just handed me the cash without a word. Anybody got a favorite tool for drum scale that doesn't beat your hands up this bad?
Man, I gotta say something about the mirror thing. Bare metal doesn't look like a mirror, it looks gray and dull with a little shine in spots. A mirror finish means somebody polished it way past what's needed, and that slick surface can actually make new scale stick faster because it gives the crud a smooth face to grab onto. You usually want a light profile on the steel, not a glassy shine. Not trying to take anything away from two shifts with a needle gun, that's real work and Ray owed you that 20. Just saying if it's truly mirror-smooth in there you might be pulling that drum again sooner than you'd like.
