Swapped my opinion on audio books after a road trip flop

I used to think audio books weren't real reading, but last month I drove 8 hours to visit my sister in Phoenix and my eyes were too tired to keep the paper book open. About 3 hours in, I gave in and started listening to Neuromancer on a free app. The narrator's voice totally changed how I pictured the scenes, and I actually finished it before I hit her driveway. Now I'm wondering if I missed out on a whole layer of storytelling by always sticking to print. Has anyone else had a book hit different when you heard it out loud?

Totally get this. I was the same way about audio books until last year. Listened to World War Z on a long drive and the full cast made it feel like I was watching a documentary instead of reading a book. The different accents and voices added so much tension I didn't get from the page. Still prefer print for most things but I get why people mix it up now.
