Can we talk about the time I glued a text block with the spine grain running the wrong way?

I was rebinding a cheap paperback copy of The Hobbit last Tuesday and rushed the grain direction on the spine, and by the next morning the whole block had warped into a banana shape. Cost me a full sheet of grey board and about 40 minutes of redoing the sewing, all because I skipped holding the paper up to the light. How are you all checking grain on thin trade paperbacks where the chain lines are barely visible?
