Can we talk about how I spent 14 months applying to jobs before realizing my resume was the problem
I sent out 187 applications over 14 months and got exactly 4 callbacks, all rejections. Last Tuesday a recruiter named Dana actually called me back and said, quote, your resume reads like a job description, not a person. I pulled up my resume and saw it, every bullet was 'responsible for' and 'assisted with' and not one number anywhere. The tipping point was when my cousin looked at it for 30 seconds and asked what I actually did all day at my last job, and I could not answer. Has anyone here rebuilt a resume from scratch after years of the same format, and what did you change first?
A friend of mine went through the same thing and what finally worked was writing the resume as a list of problems she solved, not tasks she handled. The trick that helped her most was digging up old emails and project files to find the real numbers, like how many clients she handled or how much time she saved, because your brain forgets that stuff after a few years. Fourteen months is a long time to carry that, but the fact that Dana bothered to call and explain means your next round is already closer than you think.
