Everyone says just apologize to your brother after a fight, but I waited 11 months and it cost me
My older brother and I got into it over something stupid at my parents' house in Cleveland last spring, he made a comment about how I handled our dad's hospital paperwork, I fired back, and he walked out before dessert. Everyone from my mom to my aunt kept saying just call him, just say sorry, it's family, time heals it. So I did the popular thing and waited for him to cool off and come around. I checked my phone every Sunday for months like a dummy, thinking he'd reach out first. Then I saw on Facebook he took his kids to the same lake we used to go to as kids, and I was not invited, and that hit me harder than the actual fight. I finally called him on a random Wednesday in February, and he picked up on the second ring and just said come over. We sat in his garage for two hours and the whole thing was never really about the paperwork, it was about him feeling like I shut him out when dad was sick. So no, I don't buy that waiting is the mature move. Every single person who told me to just wait was wrong, and I lost almost a full year with my own brother for nothing. Has anyone else had family tell you to sit back and let the other person come to you, and it totally backfired?
