My aunt swore eggshells would keep slugs off my hostas, and my front bed now looks like a crime scene
My aunt has kept a garden in Portland for like 30 years and she told me to just crush up eggshells around the hostas, said slugs hate the sharp edges and won't cross them. I did it last April, saved every shell for a month, and by June the hostas looked like someone took a hole punch to them. Turns out slugs slide right over eggshells, and I basically gave them a little gravel path to the buffet. My aunt still swears it works at her place, so now I'm wondering if her soil is just different or if she's been lying to me for decades. What actually keeps slugs off hostas without wrecking the bed?
