PSA: Don't waste $60 on a 'rare' orchid from a random online seller like I did

I got this idea in my head last spring that I needed a really unusual orchid, something nobody else in my local club had. I found this site that claimed to have a specific hybrid from Thailand, and the pictures looked amazing. So I dropped $60 on it, plus another $15 for shipping, thinking I was getting a steal. When it arrived, the plant was basically a shriveled mess with two half-dead leaves and no roots. I tried to nurse it back for like three months, used special potting mix and everything, but it just turned to mush. Turns out the seller had like five different bad reviews about the same thing that I missed because I was too excited. Has anyone else got burned buying plants online from some random shop?

Count me in, I got burned just as bad. I spent $75 on some supposedly rare "blue" orchid from a seller in Florida, and the plant came with a broken flower spike and powdery mildew all over the leaves. @jason752, I see you had better luck, but for me it was a total waste of time and money trying to save it. The seller stopped answering my emails after I sent them photos of the damage, and I was out the full cost. Now I only buy from the few nurseries that other collectors in my club have personally vouched for, and that's saved me a lot of headaches.

Nah I've actually scored way cooler stuff taking that exact same gamble.
