Question about my pothos cuttings: water glass beat my fancy rooting gel

I stuck six pothos cuttings in a mason jar of tap water on my kitchen sill in March and dipped six more in a $14 rooting gel I grabbed at a garden center in Toledo. The water ones had roots an inch long in about two weeks, and the gel ones just sat there looking sad and slightly slimy. Has anyone else had a gel or powder actually work better than plain water, or am I just buying snake oil?
