Shoutout to the $28 moisture meter that saved my $60 fiddle leaf fig
I bought a $28 moisture meter from a nursery in Austin last spring after killing two fiddle leaf figs in a row. Turns out I was watering on a schedule instead of checking the soil, and the meter showed me the top 3 inches were bone dry while the bottom was still soaked. Now I just stick it in before I even think about grabbing the watering can. Anyone else use one of these, or do you just poke the soil with your finger?
Why did nobody tell me about these sooner? I was doing the exact same thing, watering every Sunday like it was a chore I had to check off. Killed three plants before I figured out the soil was the real boss, not my calendar. A meter takes the guessing out of it and honestly saves way more than it costs. Poking with a finger only tells you about the top inch anyway, so you're basically flying blind down where the roots actually live.
