Old foreman told me to stop buttering my head joints, took me 3 months to listen

Worked for this guy in Spokane for a quick job, he watched me lay a course and said I was wasting mortar. I was doing the standard scoop and twist on every single head joint, even on splits where the gap was barely a pencil line. He made me knock it off and only butter when the brick actually needed it. Cut my mortar use by about a third on that stretch, and I have not gone back since. Anyone else get told to change a habit that felt wrong at first but saved them time or material?
