My brother-in-law paid off $18k in 14 months and it made me question my whole budget

He works the same union job as my sister and lives in the same cheap duplex, but he cut his grocery bill to $140 a month by eating the same 3 meals on repeat, and I kept telling myself that was miserable until I realized my $600 grocery habit was just me buying convenience and snacks I didn't need, so has anyone else had a family member make their excuses feel flimsy?

My buddy Mike did this exact thing back in 2021. We both worked at a warehouse, and he paid off his truck loan in 11 months by eating chicken and rice bowls every single day, even on Sundays. I kept cracking jokes about his sad lunches, then one day I added up my own spending and realized I was dropping like $50 a week on energy drinks and gas station burritos. He didn't even brag about it, just casually told me his credit score went up 80 points, and I felt like a total clown for mocking him. Now I still eat normal food but I cut out the snacks and that alone freed up almost $200 a month.
