Can we talk about the repair shop on 9th that charges $40 just to look at your phone

Went to a shop on 9th Street in my city last week because my Pixel would not charge unless I held the cable at a weird angle. The guy at the counter said it was 40 bucks just for the diagnostic, then told me the port was fried and it would run me 120 more. I said no thanks, watched a video that night, and found out it was just 6 months of pocket lint packed in there. Took me 10 minutes with a toothpick and the phone works fine now. How do you all figure out if a shop is actually honest before you hand over your phone?
