Thermal pads vs paste for laptop GPUs, I flipped sides after 2 repairs
For years I swore by thermal paste for everything, thought pads were a gimmick. Then I repasted a GTX 1060 laptop and temps dropped 12C, but only for 3 months until pump-out kicked in. Swapped to a quality pad set from Amazon, that same laptop has held steady at 78C under load for 8 months now. Meanwhile, my buddy in Phoenix swears paste is still better on desktop cards because pads are too thick there. So which is it, are pads just a lazy fix or the real answer for mobile GPUs? Has anyone else seen pads outlast paste on a laptop they use daily?
