Reflecting on my mom's simple stews makes me curious about ingredient lists now

Growing up, a hearty stew just needed potatoes, carrots, and whatever meat was on sale. It was affordable and kept us fed for days. Nowadays, I see budget meal plans calling for exotic spices or pre-made sauces. I tried sticking to basics, but it feels like the goalposts have moved. Is it harder to keep meals simple without spending more?

Why does every recipe need a laundry list now? My mom's stew was just meat and veggies, and it hit the spot every time, lol.

Ugh, seriously! My friend tried a "viral" cookie recipe last week that needed like, seven different extracts and a special flour blend. Honestly, she spent a fortune and an hour just finding stuff. Tbh the cookies were fine, but we both agreed her basic chocolate chip ones are way better. It just feels like cooking is a competition now instead of just making good food.
