Spent $9 on a whole chicken instead of $14 on chicken breast and I'm never looking back
Last week at the Kroger in Dayton I stood in the meat aisle for a solid five minutes comparing a $14 pack of boneless skinless breast to a whole chicken marked down to $9. I went with the whole bird mostly because I was mad about the price per pound. Got home, watched a 4 minute video on spatchcocking, and had it roasted in about 50 minutes. Pulled the meat off for three dinners, then boiled the bones with some carrot tops and onion skins I normally toss and got 6 cups of stock out of it. That stock alone would've cost me $4 at the store. If you're buying breast every week like I was, do the math on whole birds, it's not close. What's everyone else doing for cheap protein that isn't beans and rice for the tenth time?
