Hot take: I tried the free airport shuttle trick to sleep at LAX and got a guided tour of every terminal instead
I read somewhere that you can ride the free shuttle between airport terminals to catch a few hours of sleep without paying for a hotel during a long layover. I had a 9 hour gap at LAX in March and my flight landed at 11pm, so I figured I'd just loop the shuttle and doze. Turns out the driver noticed me on my third lap and asked if I was okay. I told him my plan and he laughed, then said the shuttles only run until 1am and after that you're on your own. I ended up walking the whole loop of terminals twice looking for an open spot near an outlet, and the only quiet corner I found was a gate with a floor cleaning machine parked next to it. Around 4am a security guy shook my shoulder and asked to see my boarding pass, then pointed me to a row of seats behind a Starbucks that nobody uses. Slept 2 whole hours there, woke up with a crooked neck, and the coffee cost me $4. So the real hack is skip the shuttle and just ask security where the dead zone is. Does anyone know if this works at other big airports or is it just an LAX thing?
