Spent 5 hours in Lisbon trying to find a laundromat that took coins instead of an app
Ended up paying 8 euros at a hotel front desk just to wash one load, which is either a scam or the only real option in that neighborhood. Do you just budget for hotel laundry now, or is there a trick to finding coin machines in Europe?
The app thing is real and it's everywhere now. I ran into it in Berlin last spring, every machine in the place wanted you to scan a QR code and make an account with your phone number just to run one cycle. The trick I've landed on is checking Google Maps for places with older reviews that mention coins, then calling ahead if they list a number. If the reviews are all from the last year and nobody says "coin," it's probably app only. Also worth knowing that some countries just do laundry differently, like in Portugal a lot of buildings have shared machines and the local spot is often a lavandaria where you drop it off and pick it up later for less than that hotel charged you.
